The hubby beat me to the follow-up story re: our tree issue. I considered taking a little creative license and re-telling his chopping-down-the-tree story. But, the short is that the tree is now a non-issue. It won't be dropping on any unsuspecting cars as they drive by and it shouldn't warrant any more friendly issues from the city. I've learned better than to file a complaint on myself, at the very least.
For the record, we did originally talk about renting a chain saw, but our tight-wad mentally (and a 50% coupon in the mail from our favorite hardware store) led us to try it the hard way first. (What am I talking about? -- it wasn't hard for ME at all -- watching my lumber-jack man and his ax!)
Anyhow, when I returned to the store to talk about a rental, they must have heard "I want to remove teeny-tiny leaves from my tree," rather than "I want to cut the whole tree down." I've seen my father and my brother run chain saws and this thing did not come anywhere close to the size of machine I was expecting.
None-the-less, perhaps the teeny-tiny chainsaw sitting on the ground beside hubby as he swung away with the ax WAS the reason our kindly neighbor decided to stop and give us a hand. I'm not ashamed to say, it may have been pure pity that invoked such neighborliness.
The kids declared it "way cool" when the tree fell. They loved watching the whole swinging of the ax (from a very safe distance) and the whole process.
Now I'm looking at all the other old, old trees in our yard that will eventually need some serious attention in terms of branch and eventually whole tree removal.
What I know for sure? I'm not sending hubby up a ladder with an ax. AND I won't be calling to discuss it with anyone at the City Housing Department, either.
