Do you believe in... Wonder Woman?

So the other night I was reading to my son, age 5, in his bed. It was a DK book about Wonder Woman. He was listening intently. Suddenly he sat up and took a good hard look at his Superman poster, which hangs above his bed.

"I want to take that down," he said. "Wonder Woman is my favorite now."

Later, as he was drifting off to sleep, he mumbled. "I wish I was sleeping with Wonder Woman. (He meant this in the most innocent manner, let me assure you.) I wish YOU were Wonder Woman, Mom."

I wasn't sure if I should be flattered or saddened. Can it be that another woman is taking my place in my son's heart already?

It's been a few days now and we've finished the Wonder Woman book. Aside from talking with the girls about the reasons for such skimpy clothes, the mythology and history of Wonder Woman has sparked some pretty interesting discussions. Today alone we covered a pantheon of gods and goddesses, as well as World War II and Hitler. Space travel, time travel, and the variety of ways we have heard the story of Atlantis were all touched on.

After turning the last page, my son looked at me hopefully. "Mom? Do you think Wonder Woman is real?" He understands and appreciates the thoughts behind Santa, but Wonder Woman... he is still holding out some hope.

"I'm going to believe she is real," he said, but I detected a bit of sadness in his voice.

Who can blame him? Thanks to my son, I have a newfound respect for the woman myself.

Sweet story :)

Except I am finding it impossible to reconcile the fact that he's now five years old. That would mean that a great deal of time has passed since we met you guys and since that happened only a couple of years ago that is an impossiblity ;)
