Okay, I’ll confess…
...I’ve been a fan of Johnny Depp since the days of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and Benny and Joon. A little past his 21 Jump Street Days, but I suppose he’d caught my eye even then. I love his acting. I’m mesmerized by his eyes and that smile. He creeped me out a little in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I’ll happily watch Captain Jack (Pirates of the Caribbean) again and again and again.
Now I keep seeing these ads for Sweeney Todd and everything about them says this is not a movie I will want to see. I’m not into creepy, scary, blood, or gore. Murder usually turns me off. But, well… okay, almost everything. Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd, after all, and that just might be enough for me to change my mind. Because let’s just face it. He’s adorable and, in this movie, he sings.
Is that an added attraction? Go visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site and listen for yourself. He sounds pretty darned good to me.
Something that really blows me away, however, is the Internet promotion of the movie. I’m starting to see more and more websites like this… works of art on their own, really. The Sweeney Todd website is vivid, attractive (in a dark, horror show sort of way), and musical. And as I listen… it is perhaps the music that will draw me to the theater in the end.
Here’s another intriguing marketing twist. You can “Confess to the Demon Barber” at this site by phone, video or written confession. I was a little worried about what I might find there, but it seems to be quite a bit of harmless entertainment as far as I can tell.
Any more confessions from me? Well… I’m might just be a little infatuated with Alan Rickman (Snape from the Harry Potter movies) these days, as well. And it looks as if he plays the “bad guy” … Sweeney Todd’s nemesis, at least, in the movie. One more reason I just might find myself in the theater watching this movie.
Visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace.

I agree with you about Johnny Depp! It always amazes me how he chooses movie roles so diverse and complicated. My favorite was "Finding Neverland". Magoo's Mom
Yes! Johnny Depp! Captain Jack!
Have you seen the one where he plays a writer? "Secret Window." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363988/
Secret Window -- Yes.
A perfect example of how Johnny Depp can lure me to a movie I would refuse for any other actor. I gave up psycho thrillers 15 years ago (cause I was tired of being scared of the dark) and Secret Window is probably 1 of 2 that I've watched since that time.
