Last evening we were all set to take a family spin around Emporia when the eldest child mentioned her bike brakes aren't working... at all. Since our spin includes going down a rather steep hill, brakes seem important. So I began to disassemble one of two unused bikes in the shed in order to give her new brakes. As I was mounting those brakes, I saw that she was missing a nut on her front tire. Upon further inspection, the nut on the other side was entirely loose and ready to fall off at any time. Probably explains why her brakes were so well-worn. The tire has been wiggling crazily all this time, held on by barely a single nut.
I won't even bother to share the scenarios that were running through my head, imagining my baby barrelling down a hill, no brakes, a bump!, no tire!!!! We proceeded to canabalize the unused bikes only to find that neither of them used nuts that were the right size. So instead of a ride last night, everybody's bikes got a good once over. On my list of things to do today was to stop by the bike shop and get a nut to fit munchkin #1's bike. Alas, I circled the town running errands this morning and somehow forgot. Got the dog collar for the 4-H fair. Picked up hubby's dry cleaning. Bought bread. Filled up the car with gas. Picked up new glasses for munchkin #1. But drove by the bike shop twice (on the way out and on the way back home) and didn't think once about the bike.
If I don't get my act together, we won't be able to ride tonight, either.

I'm impressed with your knowledge of fixing the bikes! Mine has a flat tire that I'm going to have to replace and I'll have to get online just to figure out how to do that!
