Goings On

Overheard at my house:

First, the loud THWACK from outside followed by the high-pitched wailing of my son. It wasn't a death-wail, but enough of a cry that I jumped from my seat to see what was the matter.

The answer?

"We were blind racing."

Kaman ran into the house.

You spend much of your time in awe of their brilliance... then there are times when you are simply in awe.

It's been a long week, but a very productive week. Hubby and I have come up with a quick bike route up and around the university that takes us a little more than half an hour. It's a good ride for evening when the heat has passed but there is still plenty of light left. It's not too long for the kids, either, though there is one hill on the return trip that is quite a kicker. Tonight it was just hubby and I and we practically raced it. I beat him up the hill on the backside and I was SO glad to hear him gasping as he hit the top of it behind me. I was dead set on not letting him pass me, and didn't want to be the first to admit how hard I was sucking air. I think I'm still recovering. I didn't have a watch on, but I think we made the entire thing in about 20 minutes. Fun!

I had to stand in line for cantaloupe this morning at the Farmer's Market. It was their 25th Anniversary celebration, so there were a few extra people there. I don't always do well with crowds, especially when I don't expect them. I knew, theoretically, that this morning's market might be busier than usual, but I wasn't really prepared for the masses of little old ladies suddenly growing elbows and linebacker tactics. As I was politely standing in line, one actually started inviting her friends to cut in front of me! Many minutes later when I finally reached the table, I tried to help one woman pick up her cantaloupe (they were really big and heavy and she was trying to lift it with one hand from a few feet away). She nearly smacked my hand as she hollered, "That's mine!"

Still, I love the Emporia Farmer's Market. I've spent the entire week eating nothing but fresh veggies. My new item this week was eggplant. I'd never eaten eggplant before, but I bought two small ones on Wednesday from a vendor. They were WONDERFUL in stir fry. Extremely tender so I didn't even have to peel them. Just sliced them up right along with some small yellow crookneck squash. Today I bought more and selected a few different varieties to try out. We had the most colorful stir fry for lunch AND chocolate zucchini cake and homemade ice cream. YUM!
