My son told me he learned how to milk a cow yesterday on Reading Rainbow. He told me about the entire program, detail by detail. The most important part of milking, it seems, is the special milking stool the farmer gets to sit on. (Note to self: Ask my dad if he has any authentic milking stools left lying around.)
The “how-to” description was the best part.
“You take your hands and you grab these things that hang down… I forget what they’re called. I think they are called the twinklies. Yes, that’s what they’re called. You grab the twinklies and you pull down and the milk comes out.”
After some amount of discussion with his sister, who was choosing to correct his terminology (I was laughing too hard to provide any assistance, myself), he went on to tell me about animals that make milk being called mammals and how you can also milk cows with a machine.
So now we’ve got a wanna-be-dairy-farmer on our hands. I’ve told him to talk this over carefully with his Grandpa and his Aunt Diane. They both have considerable experience, as I recall, with milking cows for real. Hubby tells me his dad has some experience to share in that department, as well.
