We bought a CSA (community supported agriculture) share this year. I think I'm going to be a big fan of a garden harvest when I don't actually have to get out there every day and do the gardening myself.
It is currently the time of year for spring greens. We've been getting leaf lettuce at the farmer's market, some spring onions, some spinach. Eating lots of salad around our house. Tuesday we picked up red sails and romaine lettuce. We also got a pound of rhubarb. The kids were skeptical. Hubby was a bit skeptical, as well. And while I recall being skeptical about rhubarb once upon a time, I also remember my mom and grandma making rhubarb and strawberry pie.
Since we didn't have any strawberries, I looked up a rhubarb crisp recipe and middle munchkin and I got to work. Smelled wonderful while cooking. Tasted delicious.

Yummy! I LOVE rhubarb! I grew up on the stuff! We used to do rhubarb everything (think Bubba and his shrimp from Forrest Gump). I could hook you up with some pretty tried and true recipes. If you get any gooseberries, you HAVE to share! Also, very tart and very tasty in a pie. Now, I'm all a twitter over rhubarb! Your cobbler looks de-lish! Magoo
We got our share yesterday as well and had rhubarb pie tonight! It was very good. We all enjoyed it. Next time we get rhubarb we are going to try rhubarb muffins. We are using the lettuce on salads and are having tacos tomorrow. We also threw a few of the leaves in our breakfast smoothie this morning.

Rhubarb is fantastic! My dad's patch grew waist high with leaves so huge. Mom made cobblers, pies, jam, and anything else she could find a recipe for. One of her pies had a cream custard filling that still makes my mouth water to think about. Gooseberries, as Magoo mentioned, are an acquired taste. It is so hard to get them sweet enough in a pie. Harder than rhubarb - can you imagine? My grandmother had two big gooseberry bushes in her yard that Dad tried to transplant when they sold her house. They didn't take. I've not seen them anywhere since.
Enjoy your rhubarb! It is quite expensive in the produce section of the grocery store. A true gourmet item anymore.
