It's birthday celebration weekend at our house because my little guy turns seven on Monday. He took us out to eat this evening at the local Chinese buffet. Not my favorite place to eat but the kids (the younger two anyway) have decided it's "the best" place in town. Tomorrow morning we will make his cake. Our goal is to create something that looks like flowing lava. We have a chocolate fudge cake mix and plans to make some red frosting. It should be interesting. I believe there are some Star Wars characters involved, as well.
I used to go all out and try to make the kids special cakes each year. The year I bought the cake supplies for middle kid and left them at the grocery store is the year I switched to store bought cakes. Not as good, but much less stressful. Then a couple of years ago the kids hit on the idea of making their own birthday cakes. It's the best of both worlds, even if a little messy. We get the unique, creative cake -- but I don't have to worry about my perfectionist tendencies kicking in and ruining the whole project. The kids are the creators from start to finish. So far, they've been entirely pleased with the results.
Just a walk down memory lane.
