So, I ran across this website where you answer some questions about your living preferences and they give you a list of the top twenty cities that match your criteria. I did it just because I was curious, not because I’m looking for a new place to live or anything. Except for the five years I spent in Houston and the summer I lived in Beatrice, Nebraska… I’ve always lived in Kansas.
I’m quite happy as a Kansan.
None-the-less, not a single one of my top twenty cities was IN Kansas. I was a bit surprised, honestly.
Where should I be living? If Find Your Spot is to be believed… Wisconsin!
That’s right, Sheboygan, Wisconsin is the #1 city on my list. It’s just fun to say, isn’t it? In fact, there were seven cities on my list in the state of Wisconsin. A close second was Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. (My sis is going to like that one.)
My brother-in-law can close his eyes for this next bit of news, but the state that ranked second highest on my list was Oregon. I do like Oregon, but I think it has too many trees. As well, it’s so far from the center of everything… and Kansas is, well, THE center of everything.
Big surprises on my list included Fayetteville, Arkansas; Shreveport, Louisiana; Frederick, Maryland; and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
All in fun, I convinced dear hubby to take the test. His top town was Mansfield, Ohio. He also had a few Kansas towns on his list; Wichita, Topeka, and Salina among them. (Note to B.I.L. – Oregon wasn’t even a blip on dear hubby’s screen… nor was Wisconsin.)
Anyway, my conclusion is that it’s a really good thing we aren’t planning to try out a new state anytime soon. Since dear hubby and I had NOT a single matching city on our lists, deciding where to go would be pretty difficult. Then again, Grand Rapids, Michigan can’t be ALL that far from Sheboygan, right? I mean, they are both right off the same Great Lake, after all. So maybe we’d just try one of those long-distance relationships…
Nah, I’m still a Kansas girl.

For what it is worth, Oregon has for decades been cutting down its trees as fast as it can. One day, it may look just like Kansas ... except for the facts that Kansas has no hills, mountains, oceans or greenery, and Oregon has little to no wind. Ignore subconscious desires at your peril, dear S-I-L.
Cheryl was on NPR a while back making a similar comment about the trees. I guess it depends on what you're used to.
We've only lived in Kansas for two years and I'm getting used to the openness but I want to know what's wrong with trees? When we first arrived, I felt sorry for native Kansans. This is a nice enough place but you poor people hardly have any trees!
Maybe they would block some of the wind---honestly, there are some days when I'm surprised people do not blow away!
Trees are beautiful. Trees are great! But for a girl who is accustomed to walking out the door and being able to see for miles and miles in every direction -- trees can make one feel a bit... confined. I was once taking a walk while visiting the B-I-L (in Oregon) and I nearly had a panic attack over all the trees. You can't SEE anything! I had to get to the road to walk back to his house because I needed that "space" in front of me. Remember also that I am from western KS, which is really nothing like eastern KS -- truly flat, lacking water, therefore lacking trees.
I should also mention that you haven't REALLY experienced wind until you've been to western Kansas. ;-)
Hmmmm...I like living near water.
The trees were always just there, too--until now--and actually there is a nice line of them across from my house (they line a creek)!
I like trees but maybe it's because I feel safer around water. (If there is ever a large-scale national emergency, I plan to evacuate by boat!) ;)
And I will visit western Kansas one of these days but I will make sure to wear heavy boots!!!
