New Year’s Resolutions

2006 – The Year of Low Expectations
I can’t believe I didn’t commit my resolutions to the blog last year. I did make resolutions. I always make New Year’s resolutions. And I’m generally pretty good about following through.

Last year, however, I have to admit that I took a rather different approach to things. I resolved, for instance, to stop stressing about my weight and about how much I was exercising. My goal? Don’t worry about it. Enjoy myself. Forget about the scales and the BMI. Have fun and just be happy with what I am. (And don’t be ashamed to buy bigger pants.)

The result?

I worried so little about my weight that my "loose & comfy" pants are now my "standard wear" pants. My "standard wear" are my "only-if-it’s-going-to-be-less-than-one-hour-and-I’m-really-desperate-to-look-slim(er)" pants. What happened to my former "only-if-it’s-going-to-be-less-than-one-hour-and-I’m-really-desperate-to-look-slim(er)" pants? Let’s just say they’ve been retired.

I didn’t so much as step on a scale this year (except at the doctor’s office where I was disappointed, but not at all surprised, to find that dial falling a little far to the right).

But you know what? I’m going to have to call that resolution a victory. Not that I resolved to gain weight. No stressing /happy with me as I am = victory.

My second resolution, as usual, had something to do with writing goals. They were very similar to my health and body resolution. Don’t worry about it. Enjoy myself. Forget about completed manuscripts, just write and experiment and have fun. I believe the motto I came up with was – write a chapter, not a book.

If I changed "a chapter" to "a few words," I’d have to call this one, as well, a stellar victory.

My final resolution from 2006 was something vague and very achievable like enjoying my time with the kids, taking frequent naps with the cat, and throwing a hug hubby’s way now and then. (Okay, the cat part wasn't actually added until May -- prior to that it was just something like, "relax!")

When I resolve to hit homeruns, I sure hit ‘em.

Resolution Lesson from 2006? It’s all in the wording.

What’s in store for 2007?.... tomorrow’s entry.
