Electronic Media Free Day

Yesterday the family did a computer/television free day. Well, except that I did end up spending about an hour on the computer in the morning because I took a job for the weekend - a short article that I must complete today.

Since we woke up to snow falling from the sky... it wasn't quite the day I dreamed it would be. No hiking. No biking. No picnics. But we had a good day, none-the-less.

I finished reading The Lincolns: A Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary. This was just a wonderful book. I highly recommend it for people of all ages. I've found both girls on more than one occasion curled up reading it and my son sat through many pages of it as I read out loud. Fanstastic information and history, though I did feel a little blue by the end about how Mary's final years ended - a sad tragedy.

Another book on Lincoln that is well worth the read is Lincoln Through the Lens: How Photography Revealed and Shaped an Extraordinary Life.

Can you tell the kids and I have been on a presidential kick? We've started at George Washington sometime in December and we've been stalled at Lincoln for a couple of weeks. We have found so many great books and movies and we have a few road trips planned to catch up on some local history. Believe it or not, I've never been to Lecompton, Kansas and I can't even count the number of times we've passed the exit as we travelled back and forth between Topeka and Lawrence in the last five years.

Anyway... the family played poker yesterday and there was this touching moment that I just have to tell you about. Middle Munchkin was losing her chips fast. She was down to just penny chips and little boy started betting big. She apparently had a good hand and wanted to stay in, so she started counting her whites, but he slipped her enough tens to make her bet. It went round again and four of us were still in. He raised the pool even higher... ridiculously high. Turns out his goal was to get the rest of us to fold so that he could back out and give Middle Munchkin the pot. It worked, but just barely.

I didn't figure out what he was trying to do until it was all over. He was just trying to assure that his sister had enough money to stay in the game. I don't know what that says about us as poker players... but I thought it was such a sweet gesture I nearly got weepy. Anyway, we had a lot of fun and conversation.

Then hubby pulled out the wheat grinder and we baked our bread for the week. Everyone gathered to take a turn at the wheel. I wonder how long this will feel like a new and interesting toy.

Middle Munchkin got started making a bag for her guitar. The poor thing has been carrying it to and from lessons in a garbage bag all winter. Her aunt passed some material on that we thought would make an awesome guitar case, but it's taken us a while to get around to making it.

Last night, the girls and I went to the Montana Rep production of To Kill A Mockingbird. It was very well done. Aside from the fact that it was 20 degrees out by the time we made our way to the car when it was over (and we weren't quite dressed for 20 degree weather), we had a great evening.
