Big Sky

The first evening of our visit to western Kansas, the kids and I walked from my brother's house to my dad's in the evening. The darkening sky was flickering with lightening on two sides and it was breathtaking.

I actually got a bit of a lump in my throat. This is what I miss about the place I was born, this endless expanse of sky.

We had a full weekend of fabulous sky. A lot of rumbling thunder passed over our heads. Western Kansas was full of more water than I was accustomed. A hell of a hail storm pulled us all from our beds early Friday morning, but I never tired of looking up at that sky, whatever it had in store for us.

But for those hardy tempers who could love great spaces, where one spot was no more important than another, experience of the sea of grass was glorifying. On the Great Plains, a man of strong identity stood always at the center of his world -- a king of infinite space.

That huge canopy of light leaves me feeling as part of something vast. Beautiful, touching images.

Gorgeous photos. Thanks for posting this. I get to travel to Thomas Co. a lot, and it makes me want to get up there again.

Best to you.
